Faecal and urinary incontinence – GP education update on effective treatment options

Faecal and Urinary Incontinence – 2024 Treatment Options Update

The George Centre recently held an education dinner on “Incontinence Treatment Updates 2024” for our community’s GPs. The event was very well attended with lots of interactivity and questions flowing between our hospital’s medical specialists and the audience.

Why this topic had so much interest from the medical community?

It is suspected that over 18% of Australians (men and women of all ages) suffer with either urinary or faecal incontinence, or both. These statistics are higher than patients with breast cancer and cardiology conditions combined. Although the impacts on sufferers include self-imposed restrictions on lifestyle as well as implications on the workplace, and the condition is often times associated with depression and anxiety, many people don’t seek medical advice due to feelings of embarrassment and the fear of social stigma.

The good news!

The take home messages from our specialists showed that there are now many different lines of treatment available that can dramatically improve incontinence. It all starts by understanding that this is a common medical condition that can be effectively treated and starting a conversation with your GP.

Take action and change your life for the better

If you or someone you love is suffering from incontinence, don’t be embarrassed to take the next step and learn about what treatment options are available – it could change your life.
